Winter Wonderland Getaway in the Finger Lakes

Finger Lakes fun can be had year-round at area wineries! Most people enjoy the Finger Lakes during the summer months, but what about when the weather turns colder and the snow starts to fall? You may be surprised to find out that winter is a great time to visit the area and still enjoy outdoor activities, wineries and shopping- often with fewer crowds than during the busier summer months.

If you have a few days or a week you can plan a getaway or “staycation” at one or more of the lakes with a range of things to do close by during your stay. Below are some ideas and a few examples of attractions you’ll want to check out:

  • Enjoy lakefront lodging

Why stay at a hotel when you could have a whole house to yourself right on the lake? Some rental homes are available for short and long term stays even during the winter season.

Finger Lakes Getaways Vacation Rentals- A wide array of cottages and homes throughout the Finger Lakes are available to rent. Stay in a comfortable home at off-season rates while enjoying some of the area’s near-by winter attractions.

  • Take a winter wine tour

Some of the best wine trails in the country can be found in the Finger Lakes. Cayuga, Seneca, Keuka and Canadaigua lakes all have numerous wineries that can be enjoyed year-round. While most people enjoy visiting the wineries during the busy summer and autumn season, the winter season is actually the best time to visit when you can avoid crowded tasting rooms and learn more about the wines you are sampling as well as the winemakers.

Seneca Lake Polar Passport – Now through March 31, 2014 you can enjoy a free, standard flight of wines at each of the participating wineries on Seneca Lake by purchasing the Polar Passport at any participating winery.

  • Practice ice skating

You can find more than 40 ice skating facilities in the Finger Lakes region including indoor and outdoor rinks. Rent skates or bring your own and enjoy this popular pastime solo, as a couple or with the whole family.

Greater Canandaigua Civic Center- Have fun at open skate or try ice skating lessons at this multi-use facility that also hosts hockey leagues, concerts and shows.

  • Make the most of the snow by skiing

Greek Peak Mountain Resort- Located in Cortland, this resort offers skiing, snowboarding, snowshoeing, and tubing while also featuring an indoor water park, spa, fine restaurant and pub. http://greekpeak.net/

Holiday hustle and bustle combined with cold weather can leave you feeling tired and less than your best. Treat yourself to relaxation and pampering during the long winter months at one of the area’s spas.

Isabella Spa at Belhurst Castle- You’ll feel like royalty as you enjoy this spa located in a castle built in the 1800s overlooking Seneca Lake.

  • Learn and explore at museums and galleries

The Finger Lakes region has a rich history that can be explored through its many museums and galleries. Women’s rights, the Underground Railroad, aviation and glass manufacturing are just some of the areas of interest you can explore during your trip.

Johnson Museum of Art- Located on the Cornell University campus, this art gallery has one of the finest art collections in Upstate New York with specializations in Asian art, 19th- and 20th-century American art, and the graphic arts.
